Thermostatic Radiator Valves.
Thermostatic
radiator valves (also called TRV's) allow you to control
the temperature of each room independently.
They are fitted to each individual radiator and are a very energy efficient way
of controlling a central heating system (sometimes called space heating).
Without TRV's, all the radiators
in the property will try to raise all of the rooms
to the temperature which has been set by the main room thermostat.
The room thermostat is usually found in the hall.
The only control over an individual radiator is to turn it off completely,
leaving the room with no heating.
With TRV's, each radiator can be
set to control the temperature of the room.
This allows some rooms of the house to be warmer than others,
or unheated if you wish. It is easy to change the temperature setting
of the TRV by simply rotating the top of the valve.
To fit a TRV to a radiator, the
heating system needs to be drained down
and then refilled with the addition of a corrosion inhibitor.
The price for this is £105. The TRV
costs £35.
For example, to fit one TRV costs 1 x £35 (+ £105) = £140.
To fit 2 TRV's costs 2 x £35 = £70 (+ £105) = £175.
To fit 5 TRV's costs 5 x £35 = £175 (+ £105) = £280.
To fit 10 TRV's costs 10 x £35 = £350 (+ £105) = £455.
This includes the cost for the TRV's, materials and labour.
The more TRV's fitted, the lower
the cost for each one. See the table below.
It makes financial sense to have all the radiators fitted with TRV's
at the same time. You do not need a TRV for the radiator nearest
to the room thermostat (usually in the hall).
